Geneva, Switzerland - On 24 and 28 April 2017, UNIDO presented the Chemical Leasing Joint Declaration of Intent at the thirteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention (BC COP-13), the eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention (RC COP-8) and the eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention (SC COP-8) that will be held from 24 April to 5 May 2017 in Geneva.

Since Chemical Leasing  mirrors the three conventions´ mutual objective of protecting people and environment from harmful substances, UNIDO´s work on up-scaling Chemical Leasing was presented at the conference´s technology fair and within the session of "International Cooperiation and Coordination". It was stressed that Chemical Leasing can contribute and stimulate in particular

  1. Engagement of industry and the public sector to translate the objectives of the three conventions into business oriented opportunities;
  2. Fostering of innovation by acting as a concrete example of how to implement the conventions, and by building synergies at global, national and local level.

The full statement delivered by Mr. Klaus Tyrkko, Head of UNIDO´s Stockholm Convention Division, can be read here. This legally non-binding declaration aims to increase awareness of chemical leasing at the political level and strengthens the cooperation of the partners in global chemical leasing promotion. It is open for additional partners.

As reported earlier, the Joint Declaration of Intent on Chemical Leasing is a joint initiative by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment and UNIDO.
